The Dangerous Myth of the End of STIs
Between antibiotics, vaccines, oral birth control, and PrEP, it may seem like the safest time to have sex, ever. So safe, perhaps, that condoms aren’t necessary? A 2017 poll of British youths showed that more than half of the participants didn’t use condoms with new partners. Experts chalk this up to risk compensation – since you’re safe on one front (ie: you’re taking birth control so won’t get pregnant, or you’re taking PrEP so you won’t contract HIV), you feel okay engaging in “risky behavior” on other fronts, like ditching the condoms. Cut to the number of chlamydia cases reaching an all time high, while syphilis and gonorrhea are as common now as they were in 1991 (for the first time since 1991).
